What's the Difference Between Sportscar Prestige and Exotic Prestige?

Is it an Exotic or is it a High-End Sportscar/Touring Car? If a variant is an exception, call it out. Pick any or add your own.

Chevrolet Corvette
Dodge SRT Viper
Alfa Romeo 4C
Porsche 911
Jaguar F-Type
BMW i8
Audi R8
Acura NSX
Nissan GT-R
Aston Martin Vantage
Ferrari California T
Bentley Continental
Maserati GranTurismo
Rolls Royce Wraith
McLaren 570s
Lamborghini Huracan
Tesla Model S P90D

Mercedes SLS AMG
Mercedes-AMG GT-S
Mercedes-AMG SL65
Mercedes-AMG S65
Mercedes-Maybach S600

I have always considered the Corvette to be the “All American Sportscar,” while the Viper held the “All American Exotic” distinction. The way I (and it seems most others, car enthusiasm absence or excess) react to a Corvette the same way we react to a Porsche. The more track focused, the more we freak out. Hence why the GT3 seems to be more exotic than the Turbo S and why the C6 ZR1 still seems more special than the C7 Z06. But if someone pulls in with a Viper, regardless of trim level, reactions run more similar to a Lamborghini Huracan than Audi R8. If that Viper is an ACR, it can probably be parked next to a Super Trofeo Gallardo without looking out of place. But this made me think that maybe price point, sales volume, performance level, and brand cache have less to do with the title than the vehicles character.

McLaren keeps saying the 570s is merely a sportscar, and the price point seems to agree. But that car in base form is still more appealing than a 911 Turbo S, the venerated everyday supercar killer. However, the 2017 Acura NSX does not have any exotic cred for me. I feel like the Alfa Romeo 4c and Aston Martin Vantage are entry level exotics while the Acura just doesn’t hit that sweet spot even with the price and nameplate prestige. And yet, somehow with the exact same issues, the Ford GT would still be an exotic even at $120,000.

So help me out, what cars are exotics and which ones are just sportscars/touring cars? Like Maserati GT, exotic for me. AMG GT, just a sportscar. Or Ferrari California T is a high end touring car like a V12 Mercedes SL, but the BMW i8 is an exotic. I don’t know Oppo, maybe I’m crazy. You ladies and gents have any thoughts on this?

It’s like when metalheads try to differentiate between NuProgressive Norwegian Crabcore and Swedish Fishcore.

I agree with you on all points really except the point about the NSX. That is indeed an exotic and a supercar. 570hp and an advance hybrid setup. It will be a crowd stopper. A Corvette Zr1 won’t be.

What is more interesting to me is the Tesla P90D, SL65, Etc. How do these halo luxury cars fall into the market. Exotic? Super luxury?

And I’m over here still getting into Finnish Floundercore. Used to be into Scandinavian Killamari but lost a kidney.

I’ve been trending towards German Conch Schelle. You can hear the ocean, and it’s loud

The set up is very exotic on the NSX, but the execution is more to move technology down market rather than push performance upmarket. Kind of how the electic motors used for the RC-F’s torque vectoring differential isn’t really a performance gain as much as a tech gain. Like the hybrid system on the XC90. Not revolutionary, but more a show of technical ability. The 4c and 570S constructions are for sure exotic. The NSX is technology in the Hyundai/Kia way of taking the top end tech and quickly moving it down market to take advantage of and dissipate the halo effect.

Very good point. I can’t argue there. But couldn’t the same be said about the i8 yet that is exotic?

True, in the i8s case, for me, it’s the design and the fucking doors. If the next Z4 had doors like those, it would pop up into exotic territory.

I kina agree with Miles.

I know I’m prejudiced, but almost any Corvette is classified as a sports car, while I’ve been gobbling them up (including the base C7) with my car which when compared to the sports car Corvette is the exotic of the family.

I want an XLR-V so badly still. I’m years out now since I had to buy a crossover. Fingers are crossed some old fart in Florida bought it brand new in the mid 2000s and it will be at 45,000 miles by the time I find it. Don’t write any articles that make the value go up!

It’ll happen for you (they’re coming down fast), but I would avoid them Florida cars... too close to the salt water.
